What's Your Big Idea?
The Ultimate Music Business Summit is a three-day virtual conference about the business of being a musician.
What can you share that will help other musicians grow their business, expand their network, market themselves better, improve their sales skills, and ultimately make more money?
What Are We Looking For?
We're looking for people who believe that musicians in the 21st-Century are small business owners and need to know how to run a business in order to be successful.
We're looking for people who can provide ACTIONABLE advice (that is, things the attendees can do NOW, not after signing up for a program or course) on any topic related to starting, owning, and running a business. Especially how to be profitable. All the while remembering that the musicians who attend are artists who want to share their gifts with the world.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
You DO NOT need to be a musician to be a UMBS Presenter. Just know that you are speaking to highly trained individuals who are artists first, and business owners second. Keep in mind that many musicians make a living as part of the gig economy and have multiple streams of income (writing/composing, performing, teaching, part-time jobs, etc.).
Why Should You Submit a Proposal?
1

Each year UMBS has grown. This year we're anticipating 300-500 attendees.
2

Each speaker will recieve the list of all UMBS ticket holders.
3
Establish your brand
Is part of your portfolio career helping others? Use your UMBS presentation to deepen awareness of your brand and what you do.
4
Make some money
Each presenter will be given a unique affiliate code to share with their audience. We give 50% of all profit (ticket price minus any platform expenses) to all affiliates for all tickets.
5
Help other musicians
Do you remember all the questions, fears, and worries you had before you started launched your business or as you crossed each threshold? Here's your chance to help others take the leap.
6
Fulfill any professional activity requirements
If you need to fulfill professional activity requirements for your employer, here's a chance to check that off your list while helping the bigger musical community.
7
Grow YOUR businss
Do you own your own business? With access to the list of ticket holders and establishing your brand, this is a great way to continue developing your personal business.
8
Increase opportunities for yourself and others
Opportunities exist at the intersection of your talent stack and the wants, needs, and desires of those you serve. Presenters at UMBS have the unique opportunity to create and find new opportunities for themselves AND help the attendees see, find, and take advantage of the opportunities in front of them.
9
Raise the tide
A rising tide lifts all ships. The more we actively improve the ability of the musical community to serve others, build businesses, and make money, the better it is for EVERYONE.
10
Encourage others
Often, what gets in the way of the business owner—no matter what type of business one owns—is crippling fear and anxiety. UMBS presenters have a history of encouraging the attendees and empowering them to take whatever actions are necessary to build their careers.
11
Eliminate doubt and fear
Through your UMBS presentation you can actively eliminate any doubt and fear in the minds of the attendees as they contemplate whatever leaps they need to take.
12
Solve problems
The heart of business is the solving of problems. Attendees of UMBS have problems—their wants, dreams, hopes, and fears—and UMBS presentations teach strategy, knowledge, and methods for solving problems.
13
Clarify action steps
Many people just don't know what to do. They don't know how to leap or to where. Through your UMBS presentation, you will be able to help the attendees clarify the steps—the actions—they need to take.
14
Move the needle
This is your chance to make a significant difference in the lives of hundreds of musicians by helping them leap and shift the needle forward in their careers and businesses.
15
Bring people into your world
Through your UMBS presentation, you have the opportunity to bring the attendees into your world by helping, serving them, and ultimately creating fans of you and what you do.
16
Be seen as an expert
You might not feel like an expert—and trust us, we're not necessarily looking for experts—but you have something to offer the musical community. There are people who need to hear your message, hear your story, and learn from you. UMBS presenters become experts in their fields.
About The Theme
The theme for UMBS 2023 is LEAP.
What does it mean to leap as a music entrepreneur and business owner?
What leaps does a musician need to take to grow their audience, bring products and services to the marketplace, identify the needs of those they serve, and ultimately, make money?
Can you help help someone make the LEAP? If so, we want to hear about it.
Have some questions? Aren't sure?

What if I don't have a business of my own?
Ideally, UMBS Presenters will be able to teach from experience. If you can share actionable advice related to theme that you've used to build your career, then by all means please submit a proposal. Part of the UMBS mission is to help all musicians see that they ARE business owners and when they learn to think like one, more opportunities appear and it's easier to become profitable.
What if I'm still trying to figure things out for myself?
Some of the best presentations are by people just like you. All we're looking for are people who have taken a LEAP of their own and can reach back, hold out a hand, and help others make the LEAP as well.
What if I've never presented before?
We still want to hear your proposal! However, we do need to see a video of you speaking in public. We don't expect professional speakers, but we do expect the presenters to be able to communicate their ideas well. With clarity, presence, and a minimal amount of fillers (ums, ahs, ers, etc.)
Can I promote my business?
We recognize that many UMBS Presenters offer coaching, courses, memberships, books, trainings, and other things. The answer is, yes, to a limited extent. We are happy to provide links back to your website and to help promote your work in the UMBS promotional materials. However, we want to avoid the presentations becoming infomercials. The presentations should be focused on a specific idea and how the attendee can use what you teach to take actionable steps right away. We encourage people to say, "I do offer coaching (or whatever). If you'd like to learn more or follow up with me, here's how to reach me." But, please, DO NOT sell your product or service through your UMBS presentation.
Can I make a free offer during my presentation?
Yes, as long as you are not selling, the offer directly lines up with the presentation topic, and the majority of your presentation is about actionable content, not list building. One could say, "If you'd like a free consult go to my website and sign up!" Simple and easy. The presentations are not sales platforms. Two things to keep in mind: 1) We are building a program/workbook for this year. Your free offer could be part of whatever materials you'd like to include in that. This is not a requirement. And, 2) All UMBS Presenters get a copy of the attendee list. So you WILL be able to get more leads shortly after the event without having to make an offer.
How can I make money for my time as a UMBS Presenter?
Great question! We value the time and expertise of all the UMBS Presenters. To that end, we offer a generous affiliate program. Each presenter will be given an affiliate URL to share with their audiences and on social media. You will receive 50% of the net profits from each ticket sold that uses your unique affiliate link. We also want you to be able to grow your business! You will receive a list of all UMBS ticket holders. Many UMBS Presenters have been able to generate multiple new clients and opportunities from their presentations.
